Job summary

The City of Suffolk is seeking a Construction Inspector to oversee local projects for compliance with planning and development policies. Under supervision, you will inspect sewer, water, roadway, and related infrastructure, review plans, and test materials to ensure adherence to City standards.

You will coordinate with contractors, property owners, and engineers, prepare reports, and participate in final inspections for acceptance of improvements.

Qualifications

• High school graduation and 1–2 years of construction or building inspection experience.
• DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months.
• DEQ Stormwater Inspector Certification or ability to obtain within 18 months.
• VDOT certifications may be required depending on department assigned.

Responsibilities

• Inspect construction projects to enforce City ordinances governing minimum standards and requirements of new sanitary sewer and water main construction, alterations, and repairs; roadway and associated infrastructure.
• Examine construction methods and materials for compliance; review project plans and revisions.
• Confers with contractors, property owners, developers, architects, engineers regarding inspection requests and codes.
• Test construction materials to ensure adherence with codes and standards.
• Oversee construction projects in the city.
• Inspect work zones for safety and erosion control practices.
• Prepare monthly estimates for capital projects and maintain project records.
