The Senior Construction Engineer coordinates and performs observation of public works, street, highway, bridge, building components, infrastructure, and track right of way on construction projects according to the specific expertise of the inspector; performs related duties as required. Conducts on-site observations of construction installations, including materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, construction safety precautions, minor concrete structures, street light and traffic signal installations, traffic control devices, and erosion and siltation control installations to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and governmental regulations. Reviews construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits, and related documents affecting assigned projects. Participates in meetings to discuss construction details and resolve issues with contractors and stakeholders. May perform field measurements and ensure conformance with safety standards. Assists in coordinating materials testing, identifies on-site project problems, and reports non-conformance issues to the project team. Monitors correction of deficiencies, recommends contract and plan adjustments, maintains daily records, and calculates progress payments. Investigates complaints related to encroachment and grading violations.

Requirements:

• KNOWLEDGE: Extensive experience with standard construction concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues effectively.
• JOB COMPLEXITY: Handles complex issues and significant projects, exercises judgment in methods and evaluation criteria, and may advise management on important matters. Exercises independent judgment and often involves coordination among groups.
• SUPERVISION: Works independently, determining methods and procedures for new assignments; may guide and supervise others.
• EXPERIENCE: Typically requires 8 to 12+ years of related experience, a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Illinois Department of Transportation experience, and a PE License.
