Job description

Senior Commissioning Engineer / Commissioning Project Manager

Compensation: $140,000–$160,000 Base Salary
Schedule: Hybrid | Approximately 2–3 Days Onsite
Location: San Francisco, CA

Position Overview

A growing engineering and design firm is seeking an experienced Senior Commissioning Engineer / Commissioning Project Manager to join its internal Commissioning team.

This position combines hands-on building commissioning with project leadership and client management. The ideal candidate has true end-to-end commissioning experience and is comfortable owning projects from the design phase through construction, functional testing, completion, and post-occupancy activities.

This is not solely a project management position. The successful candidate will remain technically involved in commissioning activities while managing multiple projects, coordinating with clients and project teams, and ensuring building systems perform according to design intent and applicable requirements.

The firm supports a diverse portfolio of projects, including student housing, educational/classroom facilities, hospitals, offices, laboratories, and other institutional and commercial buildings.

Key ResponsibilitiesEnd-to-End Commissioning
  • Lead commissioning activities throughout the complete project lifecycle.

  • Participate in commissioning during the design, construction, testing, turnover, and post-occupancy phases.

  • Review design documents and provide commissioning-related technical feedback.

  • Perform construction-site observations and verify installation and system readiness.

  • Develop commissioning plans, procedures, documentation, and testing requirements.

  • Write detailed functional performance test scripts.

  • Perform and/or lead functional and system testing.

  • Identify system deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders.

  • Support project closeout and post-occupancy commissioning activities.

  • Maintain accurate commissioning documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

Building Systems & Controls

Provide commissioning support for energy-using building systems, including:

  • HVAC systems

  • Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS)

  • Plumbing systems

  • Lighting and lighting controls

  • Irrigation systems

  • Renewable energy systems

  • Metering systems

  • Additional specialty systems based on individual project requirements

Strong BAS/controls knowledge is a major priority for this position.

Title 24 & Energy Code
  • Support commissioning activities associated with California Title 24 / California Energy Code requirements.

  • Evaluate energy-using building systems for compliance with applicable commissioning requirements.

  • Apply knowledge of ASHRAE commissioning and energy-related guidelines and standards.

  • Support sustainability and high-performance building initiatives throughout design and construction.

Project Leadership
  • Manage multiple commissioning projects simultaneously from initial design through completion.

  • Typically maintain responsibility across approximately 5–6 active projects at a time.

  • Develop project schedules, priorities, deliverables, and commissioning activities.

  • Balance hands-on technical responsibilities with project management requirements.

  • Coordinate with internal design teams, contractors, owners, and other project stakeholders.

  • Ensure commissioning activities remain on schedule and meet client expectations.

Client & Stakeholder Management
  • Serve as a primary commissioning contact for clients.

  • Lead project meetings and communicate commissioning status, findings, deficiencies, and recommendations.

  • Build strong working relationships with owners, contractors, design professionals, and other project stakeholders.

  • Translate technical commissioning issues into clear, actionable information for clients.

  • Deliver a high level of responsiveness and client service throughout the project lifecycle.

Field Testing & Construction Support
  • Work regularly within active construction environments.

  • Conduct site observations and system inspections.

  • Coordinate with contractors and controls professionals during system startup and testing.

  • Execute and document functional performance testing.

  • Verify system operation and identify performance deficiencies.

  • Follow identified issues through resolution and final verification.

QualificationsRequired / Highly Preferred
  • 5+ years of relevant experience as a Commissioning Engineer, MEP Consultant, Design Engineer, or similar building-systems professional.

  • Demonstrated commissioning experience is required.

  • Experience participating in or leading commissioning projects from design through construction, testing, and project completion.

  • Strong understanding of BAS/BMS and building controls.

  • Experience with HVAC and other energy-using building systems.

  • Strong client-facing and project leadership capabilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple commissioning projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Comfortable performing hands-on field work within active construction environments.

  • Strong communication, planning, documentation, and execution skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of California Energy Code / Title 24.

  • Knowledge of applicable ASHRAE commissioning and energy-related guidelines and standards.

  • Passion for sustainability, energy efficiency, and high-performance buildings.

Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering preferred.

  • Commissioning certification/credential is strongly preferred.

  • Candidates without the desired commissioning certification may be considered if willing to obtain the appropriate credential after joining.

  • Additional or associate-level commissioning credentials are a plus.

  • Significant relevant professional experience may be considered in place of certain education or certification requirements.

  • Candidates with 6+ years of experience as a controls contractor or contractor-side MEP/Commissioning Manager may also be considered.

Project Environment

The Commissioning team supports approximately 30 active projects across a diverse portfolio. Individual team members generally work across approximately 5–6 projects simultaneously.

Project types may include:

  • Student housing

  • Educational and classroom buildings

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities

  • Office buildings

  • Laboratories

  • Other institutional and commercial facilities

The Commissioning team works closely with the firm's internal design professionals, providing access to additional engineering expertise and support throughout projects.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will be someone who can comfortably move between technical commissioning and project leadership.

Rather than specializing exclusively in project management or field testing, this individual should be capable of handling the complete commissioning process:

Design Review ? Client Coordination ? Construction Observation ? BAS/Controls Review ? Test Script Development ? Functional Testing ? Deficiency Resolution ? Project Closeout ? Post-Occupancy

The ideal candidate can independently lead client relationships and multiple projects while remaining technically involved in the actual commissioning work.

  • $140,000–$160,000 base salary

  • Hybrid work schedule

  • Approximately 2–3 days onsite

  • Employer-paid baseline health insurance coverage

  • Paid time off and personal time

  • Sick time available after three months

  • Vacation accrual based on tenure

  • Commuter benefits

  • Additional employee benefits
