Job summary

MapLarge is seeking a Senior Cartographic Designer to shape the visual quality of maps across our software platform. This hands-on role collaborates with engineers, PMs, and domain experts to establish standards and improve aesthetics and usability of map layers.

You will develop cartographic styles, guidelines, and production-ready rendering rules, evaluate existing maps, and mentor engineers on best practices while staying current with GIS and geospatial visualization advances.

Qualifications

• Must reside in the continental US.
• Bachelor's degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years in cartography, GIS or geospatial visualization with emphasis on map design and visual communication.
• Authorized to work in the U.S. with no visa sponsorship required.
• Strong cartographic principles: symbology, labeling, typography, color theory, visual hierarchy.
• Experience designing maps for digital products, web apps, or interactive platforms.
• Experience creating and maintaining cartographic styles and design standards.
• Knowledge of spatial data formats, coordinate reference systems, and geospatial data management.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain cartographic standards, style guides, and design principles.
• Design and refine map styles to improve readability and user experience.
• Evaluate map layers and improve symbology, labeling, typography, colors and rendering.
• Collaborate with software engineers to translate designs into production styles and rendering rules.
• Review new map layers to ensure aesthetics, usability and effective communication.
• Work with product managers to understand user needs and support workflows.
• Create prototypes and concepts for new geospatial visualizations.
• Identify opportunities to improve spatial information presentation through cartographic design.
• Provide guidance on cartographic best practices to engineers and teams.
• Stay current with advances in cartography and geospatial visualization.
