Job summary

Stafford County is seeking a Building Inspector III to perform multidisciplinary inspections across residential and commercial codes, interpreting plans, permits, and regulations with considerable judgment. The position trains Building Inspector I/II in residential and commercial inspections and conducts field inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes.

Responsibilities include issuing notices, maintaining documentation, coordinating enforcement, and testifying in hearings.

Qualifications

• Possession of a Combination Residential and Commercial Building Inspector certifications by Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD).
• Possession of Fire Protection Inspector certification by the VDHCD or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
• Experience in residential and commercial construction inspection and familiarity with ADA accessibility standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field inspections for commercial and residential building construction to ensure compliance with codes and approved plans.
• Train and assist junior inspectors in residential and commercial inspections.
• Inspect water connections for backflow prevention and prevent contamination of the domestic water supply.
• Prepare documentation and issue Notices of Violations, Stop Work Orders, and other correspondence.
• Provide testimony in court or hearings and coordinate enforcement with county agencies.
