Job summary

City of Detroit, Department of Public Works, seeks an Engineer of Structures to supervise design, inspection, and construction of bridges and related structures. Role includes coordinating staff, ensuring reporting in MiBridge, and maintaining load ratings for city bridges.

The candidate will lead engineers and drafting technicians, collaborate with field staff, and prepare plans for rehabilitation and replacement projects while ensuring compliance with MDOT practices and city standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering or related field required.
• Minimum of 5 years in design/construction of bridges and structures, with 2 years in supervisory capacity including surveying and field inspection.
• MDOT Project Engineering experience on multiple projects preferred and ADA ramp construction exposure.

Responsibilities

• Oversee inspection, design and construction of bridges and structures; maintain related records.
• Supervise engineers and drafting technicians; assign, inspect, and monitor work in progress.
• Ensure procedures for bridge/structure inspection, including retaining walls, and proper reporting in MiBridge.
• Ensure load ratings are current for city bridges; prepare plans/specs for rehab, repair and replacement.
• Coordinate with Field Engineer on staffing for inspectors, testing technicians, and surveyors for project design and construction.
• Conduct studies of materials, sources, equipment and methods used for bridges and structures; prepare engineering reports.
• Establish standards/guidelines for design staff, inspectors and contractors; initiate staff training.
• Investigate costs of safety zones and hauling solid waste; estimate personnel, materials, time, and cost.
• Represent the division in discussions with other departments, private concerns, and public utilities; coordinate street/alleys enhancements.
