Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Senior Bridge/Structural Engineer for our Richmond or Virginia Beach office. You will perform senior engineering work on transportation projects, develop plans using CAD, and mentor junior engineers.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Structural or Civil Engineering, 5–7 years of post-education experience, and a professional engineer license (multi-state preferred). Occasional local travel may be required, and US work authorization is required.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
5-7 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
Proficient in engineering analysis, design, and practices, including rehabilitation and new design.
Proficient in or strong knowledge of process and concepts for design/build.
Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
Proficient in technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, LEAP Bridge, LARSA, STAAD Pro, AASHTOWare BrR).
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional local travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.

Responsibilities

Perform senior professional bridge/structural engineering work including development and drafting of plans and details using CAD software.
Field inspection and condition assessment of bridges, sign structures, culverts and retaining walls.
Preparation of quantity and cost estimates.
Preparation of structural analysis and design calculations.
Review of drawings to assure compliance with design intent and specifications.
Mentor junior engineers and assist more experienced engineers.
Prepare technical studies, reports, and design document packages.
Incorporate advanced modeling techniques and design requirements for safe end-user functionality in transportation projects.
Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on structural soundness from loads and environmental pressures.
Generate documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and 2D/3D illustrations.
Abide by safety guidelines and site procedures including data, surveys, and construction.
Complete training on assigned tasks.
Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company funds and conduct, adhering to policies.
