Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Diagnostic Instrumentation Specialist - Staff Scientist, level 3, to develop and deploy beam diagnostics hardware for precision measurement and control of linear accelerators and FEL parameters. The role encompasses collaboration across accelerator operations, controls engineering, and DOE partner labs.

The candidate will participate in R&D aligned with lab goals, prepare proposals, and manage projects, including commissioning and machine development

Qualifications

PhD required in physics, engineering, mathematics or related field with 4+ years of relevant accelerator Diagnostics experience.
Proven ability to communicate effectively and work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Responsibilities

Support LCLS accelerator diagnostics systems development, deployment, and operations.
Collaborate in accelerator science and beam diagnostics R&D to enable advanced operation modes.
Define design requirements and performance metrics for new diagnostics systems.
Operate EPICS-based control systems and GUIs in MATLAB and Python.
Maintain and upgrade legacy diagnostics and lead modernization efforts.
Contribute to proposals and project execution for FELs and linac drivers.
Troubleshoot issues, document systems, and train operators.
