Overview

Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Senior Bacterial Core Technician to perform research and development in collaboration with scientific and technical staff. The contractor will be responsible for BSL-3 laboratory operations, animal manipulations, and conducting approximately 5 animal studies annually for DTRA-funded and contracted projects.

Position Support and Organization

This role supports the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, MD. USAMRIID collaborates with military, DoD, interagency, private sector, and academic partners to protect against biological threats, conduct research, and develop medical countermeasures.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is a nonprofit organization advancing military medicine by supporting scientific programs benefiting military personnel and civilians. Since 1983, HJF has linked military medical research with federal and private partners, enabling researchers to focus on their scientific goals.

Responsibilities
  1. Perform in vitro MIC testing of therapeutic compounds against Tier 1 bacteria, involving 30-strain diversity sets and testing over 72 compounds annually.
  2. Participate in animal studies (mouse, rat, rabbit), including drug administration, sample collection, and ensuring compliance with IACUC protocols.
  3. Attend weekly lab meetings, contribute to experimental design, and present at scientific conferences, potentially involving travel.
  4. Support pharmacokinetics and toxicology studies in small animals, including sample collection for analyses.
  5. Assist with data analysis, report drafting, and support biophysical techniques like mass spectrometry and chromatography.
  6. Prepare media/reagents (~25 annually), assist with animal challenges (~5 annually), and perform animal injections (~400/year).
  7. Support in vivo projects, including bacterial burdens (~500/year), necropsies (~500/year), and blood collections (~125/year).
  8. Manage laboratory inventories, safety functions, and chemical inventories monthly and biannually.
  9. Review literature, assist with SOPs and manuscripts, and present research findings.
  10. Maintain GLP compliance, contribute to study design, and manage research agreements with external partners.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree with 7 years' related experience or Master's degree with 3 years' experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency in complex lab procedures, meeting deadlines, good communication, and analytical skills. US citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain necessary security clearances.

Physical and Work Environment
  • Maintain health standards for BPRP, CPRP, CSPRP programs.
  • Routine immunizations and TB testing as required.
  • Lift materials up to 10 lbs, and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Primarily laboratory setting.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $57,650 - $93,100, based on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans.

Employment contingent upon background checks, and qualifications may be considered as equivalents with prior approval. Must comply with all applicable regulations and maintain required program enrollments.
