Job summary

affirm is seeking a senior backend engineer to own the Communications backlog and deliver scalable, multi-region messaging services. You will design reliable services, collaborate across teams, and build resilient vendor integrations to communicate with customers at scale.

The role emphasizes ownership, high-quality code, and active participation in on-call rotation within a remote-first, Spain-based setup with visa sponsorship available.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software development or engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin.
• Experience with AWS, MySQL, DynamoDB, and Kubernetes.
• Experience designing multi-region, multi-tenant platforms.
• Experience integrating with third-party messaging vendors.
• Ability to write high-quality, maintainable code.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver quarterly technical goals for Communications.
• Design and evolve reliable backend services for high-volume messaging.
• Collaborate with product, design, analytics, security and engineering teams.
• Design, implement and operate integrations with external messaging vendors.
• Identify and solve scalability, developer experience, and resilience issues.
• Support operations by defining SLIs/SLAs and improving on-call processes.
• Promote quality through testing, reviews, and robust deployment practices.
• Mentor teammates and provide technical direction and feedback.
• Participate in on-call rotation.
