Job summary

McGraw Hill is seeking a Sr Software Engineer, Backend to design, develop, and operate scalable backend services in a modern microservices environment. You will work with TypeScript and Go, build GraphQL and REST APIs, and deploy on Kubernetes (Amazon EKS) in a distributed, event-driven cloud setup.

You will own services end-to-end, drive production readiness, and mentor engineers while aligning with architecture and security practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong experience with TypeScript and Go for backend services.
• Strong experience with microservices, distributed systems, and SOA.
• Experience designing GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Experience building and operating event producers/consumers with queues and retries.
• Hands-on experience with AWS and Kubernetes (preferably Amazon EKS).
• Strong data modeling skills across relational, NoSQL, and graph databases.
• Experience with observability tools like New Relic and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience leading complex initiatives, mentoring engineers, and coordinating dependencies.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and operate scalable backend services using TypeScript and Go.
• Own services throughout their lifecycle including architecture and production readiness.
• Build and evolve GraphQL and REST APIs with backward compatibility and versioning.
• Design distributed systems and independently deployable microservices.
• Create event-driven components with queues, topics, and retries.
• Deploy and operate services on Kubernetes and Amazon EKS.
• Use AWS services like DynamoDB, Aurora/RDS, S3, SQS, SNS, and Secrets Manager.
• Model data across relational, NoSQL, and graph databases.
• Collaborate with multiple teams to deliver shared-service integrations.
• Improve reliability with automated testing, observability, tracing, and logging.
