Job summary

Pearson is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to own and drive backend systems, distributed services, and cloud-native architectures across the platform. You will design, develop, and operate scalable software, partnering with product, architecture, and security teams to deliver reliable solutions at scale.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in CS or related field; master’s a plus.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven track record as technical lead or senior engineer on complex initiatives.
• Deep knowledge of backend concepts: distributed systems, concurrency, scalability, resiliency, data processing.
• Strong programming experience in a modern language (Java, Kotlin, Scala, C#, Go, Rust, TypeScript).

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support of complex software systems.
• Build scalable, reliable backend services and event-driven streaming architectures on AWS.
• Drive major engineering initiatives from discovery to production rollout and ongoing support.
• Balance new features with modernization, debt reduction, and reliability improvements.
• Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and promote engineering best practices.
• Produce clear technical documentation and architecture decisions.
