Job summary

Pearson is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to own and deliver scalable backend systems and cloud-native services. You will drive architectural decisions, partner with product teams, and mentor engineers across global locations to ensure reliable and maintainable solutions.

The role emphasizes building distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and production-ready platforms on AWS, while modernizing and improving existing capabilities for long-term maintainability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience as a technical lead or senior engineer for complex, cross-functional initiatives.
• Deep knowledge of backend engineering concepts: distributed systems, concurrency, scalability, resiliency, etc.
• Strong programming experience with Java, Kotlin, Scala, C#, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
• Experience designing microservices, RESTful APIs, asynchronous workflows, event-driven architectures, streaming systems, and integrations.
• Experience with AWS and cloud-native engineering, including several AWS services.
• Experience with relational, NoSQL, graph, and streaming data technologies; data modeling and performance optimization.
• Strong API design, system integration, security, and data protection principles.
• Experience with automated testing and CI/CD; observability and monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support of complex software systems.
• Build scalable, reliable backend services and stream-processing solutions.
• Own major engineering initiatives from discovery to delivery and production rollout.
• Balance new features with modernization, technical debt reduction, and reliability improvements.
• Provide technical leadership across onshore and offshore teams.
