Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator for a 100% remote position supporting the Veterans Affairs department. The role requires 8+ years in system administration with a cloud focus and Public Trust clearance eligibility.

The candidate will maintain complex AWS environments, Windows and Linux/Unix systems, and a scalable cloud architecture while ensuring security and compliance across HIPAA, GDPR, and SOC 2 frameworks.

Qualifications

• Experience managing and maintaining complex AWS environments.
• Hands-on experience with Windows and Linux/Unix OS.
• Experience with large-scale, high-availability cloud architecture.
• Proficiency in core AWS services: EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, Lambda, IAM, CloudFormation, CloudWatch, Route 53.
• Experience with AWS security practices (IAM, Shield, WAF).
• Experience designing and managing scalable AWS infrastructure.
• Scripting for automation (Python, Bash, PowerShell, NodeJS).
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
• Experience with AWS monitoring/logging tools (CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Config).
• Understanding AWS security and compliance (HIPAA, GDPR, SOC 2).
• Encryption, key management, data protection in AWS.
• Experience with AWS database services (RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora, Redshift).
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (CodePipeline, CodeBuild).
• Experience with containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS).
• Strong analytical/problem-solving; ability to explain technical concepts.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-level operational maintenance, support, and upgrades for complex OS and server hardware.
• Develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope.
• Coordinate and perform software installations and upgrades to OS and software packages.
• Schedule installations and upgrades per IT procedures and maintain them.
• Monitor and tune multiple systems for optimum performance.
• Ensure data recoverability with backups and archives.
• Plan and modernize servers; implement SOPs and schedules.
• Audit workstations and servers for compliance with standards and policies.
• Collaborate with Network and System Analysts to define systems to implement.
• Mentor junior admins and lead technical projects.
