RTX in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture of avionics software and core libraries for safety-critical systems. You will drive DO-178 compliant development across the full software lifecycle, collaborating with cross-functional teams and engaging with customers and regulators.

You will own certification artifacts, guide technical direction, and contribute to system-level design for civil and military certification programs.

Qualifications

• Typically requires STEM degree with 8+ years experience or advanced degree with 5+ years.
• Proven experience designing software architecture, libraries, or platform components.
• Lead technical execution including customer engagement and senior stakeholder briefings.
• Hands-on DO-178 software development and certification activities.
• Experience working across cross-functional teams to deliver complex solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architecture and design of core software components, libraries, and tooling.
• Drive technical direction across development and verification for safety-critical software (DO-178).
• Define and manage software requirements, decomposition, and traceability.
• Develop and verify software using modern C++ and OO design principles.
• Own and produce DO-178 certification artifacts, including DAL-A deliverables.
• Lead and support certification efforts with customers and regulatory authorities.
• Conduct peer reviews to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, program leadership, and customers.
• Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally (<10%).
