Job summary

Fort Lewis College's Campus Audiovisual Technology Services (CATS) seeks a Senior Audiovisual Engineer to lead design, integration, and support of AV and automation across campus spaces. The role includes live event production, streaming, and training faculty to maximize reliable technology use.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline (or four years of professional IS/AV experience in lieu of a degree).
• Two years of experience with AV control systems such as Crestron, Extron, or Q-SYS.
• Proficient with AV technology: projectors, PTZ cameras, displays, HDMI/DisplayPort, HDBaseT and Dante.
• Familiarity with networking, Windows and Mac OS, and basic sound engineering principles.

Position Summary

The Senior Audiovisual Engineer is a key contributor to the Campus Audiovisual Technology Services (CATS) Team in the Information Technology Department of Fort Lewis College. The CATS Team designs, integrates, and supports AV and various automation/control technology in almost all campus spaces. The CATS Team maintains the AV equipment throughout campus to ensure that all students, staff, and community clients are able to use the provided technology. The CATS Team also supports the AV needs of events across all Fort Lewis College spaces, both during and outside of normal business hours. The primary duties of the Senior Audiovisual Engineer include design, integration, and configuration of crucial AV technologies. Expertise should include knowledge of the Q-SYS Designer software, the QSC/Q-SYS ecosystem, the Dante audio protocol, HDBaseT, and other AV routing technologies, as well as understanding basic sound engineering principles. The senior technician leads the efforts in producing large venue events, many of which require live streaming and/or complex audio production. The Senior Audiovisual Engineer must also participate in the standard technician's duties of setup, installation, and the support of AV equipment such as projectors, speakers, microphones, cameras, TVs, monitors, etc. They complete low-voltage wiring, programming, and basic construction related to the installation of media equipment.

Job Description

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Address issues reported through the ticketing system, email, chat system, and CATS Hotline phone queue.
• Submit issues to other departments and employees of Fort Lewis College through the same systems whenever appropriate.
• Program QSC hardware using Q-SYS designer software.
• Stay current with the various changes and updates to components and software in the QSC/Q-SYS ecosystem.
• Operate live-streaming equipment (SDI/HDMI cameras, mixing line level and microphone level audio signals) for events using mixing board hardware and/or software such as OBS, VMIX, or Production Truck.
• These events often require the creation and editing of overlay graphics.
• Install and maintain the AV equipment and user interface in all academic spaces both on Campus and remote sites associated with Fort Lewis College, ensuring reliability, availability, and offering support and training to faculty and staff.
• Update the internal wiki system with relevant information for other I.T. agents.
• Assist Fort Lewis staff and outside organizations with event AV needs.
• Event support includes AV equipment - microphones, PA systems, video screens, projectors, video monitors, lighting and recording equipment.
• Plan and complete low voltage wiring and basic construction for AV projects, coordinating with Physical Plant Services (PPS) whenever necessary.
• Help keep the CATS office, work areas, and equipment storage locations organized.
• Assist the Technology Support Services (TSS) Team in the large-scale refreshing of lab and classroom workstations.
• Research, test, and implement innovative technologies to update teaching spaces, facilitate “Hyflex” learning, and meet the increasing demands of a more internet-connected education system.
• Other duties may be assigned by the Manager of Campus Audiovisual Technology Services as needs arise.

• Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.

Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline
• Four years of professional experience in the Information Systems or audiovisual fields can be substituted for the bachelor's degree
• Two years of experience working with Crestron, Extron, Q-SYS or similar AV control systems
• Technical familiarity with video equipment: projectors, PTZ cameras, digital displays, webcams, HDMI/DisplayPort, HDBT, various video technologies
• Technical familiarity with audio equipment and basic sound engineering principles: sound boards and audio mixers, large format speakers, PA systems, Shure microphone systems both wired and wireless
• Familiarity with network AV technology, specifically the Dante audio protocol
• Technical familiarity with computer operating systems, both Windows and Apple
• Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products
• Ability to organize, follow procedures, and give attention to detail
• Ability to produce written technical documentation in a user-friendly format

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience

• Hands-on software and hardware troubleshooting experience
• Experience with Footprints or Freshservice incident and problem manager or similar ticketing system
• Experience working in a higher education environment
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
• Q-Sys Level 1 Certification
• Dante Level 1 Certification

Reports To / Supervisory Responsibility

The Senior Campus Audiovisual Technician position reports to the Manager of Campus Audiovisual Technology Services.

Work Environment

Inconsistent Schedule

The Senior Campus Audiovisual Technician must be able to work on a flexible schedule of days, nights, and weekends in support of events that take place during these times.

Physical Demands

• Stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, and crawl to install or maintain equipment
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work
• Frequent work requiring a ladder
• Frequent access to crawlspaces, ceilings, and the like to pull cable through walls/conduits and install new equipment
• Frequent heavy lifting of less than 50 pounds is required

Less than 5% travel is expected for this position.

Compensation

The salary is $57,000 to $59,500 , plus a comprehensive benefits package.
