Job summary

FreeWheel, a Comcast company, is seeking a Lead Software Engineer (ENG 5) to drive the technical direction of the Buyer Cloud Ad Serving platform. This principal-level role focuses on scalable distributed backend services with single-digit latency, and involves setting strategies, mentoring engineers, and shaping engineering practices across teams.

You will lead architecture for high-throughput ad auctions, work with Product, SRE, and Data teams, and operate without people management

Qualifications

• 13+ years of professional software engineering experience
• 2+ years in a Staff or Lead Engineer role
• Expert-level proficiency in compiled/high-performance languages (C++, Go, Java, or Rust)
• Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed backends
• Strong understanding of concurrency, multithreading, memory management, and Linux networking

Responsibilities

• Architect end-to-end architecture for scalable low-latency backend services
• Drive multi-team initiatives focused on reliability, scalability, and operational excellence
• Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks in distributed workflows
• Partner with Product, Infrastructure, SRE, and Data Engineering to define tech roadmaps
• Establish design reviews, code quality, testing, observability, and RCA practices
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design coaching and reviews
