Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an engineer who can translate ambiguous business problems into actionable AI solutions, spanning discovery through production in client-facing engagements.

You will design approaches, implement AI patterns, and validate results while balancing cost, latency, and security. This role also involves mentoring peers and shaping reusable patterns for government-focused projects.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and shipping production software.
• 2+ years building AI-enabled applications with LLMs, retrieval, and agent patterns.
• Experience evaluating AI quality with metrics and tests.
• Strong programming in Python/TypeScript/SQL with API integration.
• Ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to explain tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity.
• Excellent written communication; client-facing documentation.
• Ability to work with minimal direction in ambiguous situations, driving to decision.
• U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Lead discovery with stakeholders to understand workflow and success criteria.
• Define measurable success criteria before building and evaluate results.
• Advise against AI when simpler solutions suffice (rules, process changes).
• Select AI patterns appropriate to problems (extraction, classification, summarization, retrieval, agents).
• Make architecture decisions balancing quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Build complete capability: prompts, retrieval, APIs, data handling, UI, and deployment.
• Create evaluation sets and iterate on results with real data.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and traceability.
• Produce client-facing documentation and design rationale.
• Monitor post-launch metrics and optimize as needed.
• Mentor engineers and share reusable patterns with the team.
