Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an experienced AI/ML engineer to turn ambiguous business problems into production-ready AI solutions. You will work with stakeholders to assess whether AI adds value and to design and implement the approach.

This is client-facing and hands-on across discovery, build, and operations, spanning delivery, internal product work, rapid proofs of concept, and enablement. You will balance modern AI capabilities with engineering rigor, ensuring measurable outcomes, governance, and

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and shipping production software.
• Experience building applications that integrate large language models, including prompt engineering and retrieval-augmented generation.
• Ability to evaluate AI system quality with metrics and test sets.
• Strong programming in Python/TypeScript/SQL and API integration across full app lifecycle.
• Ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Judgment on tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity with explainable rationale.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing documentation and design rationale.
• Ability to work with minimal direction in ambiguous situations and drive to a decision.
• Track record of improving other engineers' capabilities; U.S Citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Lead discovery with stakeholders to understand workflow and success criteria.
• Define measurable success criteria before building.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution suffices.
• Select appropriate AI pattern for the problem (extraction, classification, summarization).
• Make architecture decisions on where workloads run balancing quality and cost.
• Build complete capabilities including prompts, retrieval, APIs, data handling, and UI.
• Create evaluation sets and iterate based on results.
• Determine readiness for deployment and monitor post-launch metrics.
• Operationalize capabilities including governance and logging.
• Produce client-facing documentation and explain limitations.
