Job summary

Affirm, Inc. is seeking a backend AI Platform engineer to own design-to-launch decisions for scalable AI workloads. You will build gateway, runtime, and evaluation services that scale across millions of users, with strong governance around identity, quotas, and tool access.

You will collaborate with security, infra, and product teams, monitor system health, and drive high-quality code with clear design standards.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
• Practical experience building with LLMs, agents, or AI frameworks in production: inference APIs, LLM gateways, tool calling, evals, or agent runtimes.
• Understanding AI usage and infrastructure to support AI workloads across disciplines.
• Ability to define a technical plan for delivering a significant feature with elegant, extensible design.
• Owns growth, seeks feedback, and communicates effectively with a global team.
• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Responsibilities

• Plan, execute, and own technical decisions and projects within the AI Platform team from design through launch and on-call.
• Design and build gateway, runtime, and evaluation services to scale AI workloads for millions of users.
• Make AI spend attributable and governable with identity, quota, routing, caching, and failover controls.
• Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and product teams to set guardrails for tool access.
• Create and monitor metrics; own operational health including monitoring, runbooks, and on-call.
• Set and improve code review and design standards and promote them beyond the team.
• Leverage AI tools and agentic workflows to multiply team output and efficiency.
