Affirm, Inc. is hiring for an AI Platform Backend Engineer. You will design, build, and scale backend systems that support AI workloads across millions of users, with a focus on secure, governable gateways and production-grade tooling.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with Python or Kotlin.
• Track record of highly available distributed systems.
• Experience building with LLMs, agents, or AI frameworks in production.
• Understanding AI usage and infrastructure for AI workloads.
• Experience delivering a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple design.
• Strong code skills and maintainable codebase.
• Ownership mindset and willingness to seek feedback.
• Strong written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Plan, execute, and own technical decisions and projects within the AI Platform team, from design through launch and on-call.
• Design and build the gateway, runtime, and evaluation services that take AI workloads from pilot to production, securely scaling across millions of users.
• Make AI spend attributable and governable: identity, quota, routing, caching, and failover controls.
• Partner with security, infrastructure, and product teams to set guardrails for agentic workloads and tool access.
• Create and monitor metrics; own the operational health including monitoring, runbooks, and on-call.
• Set and improve code review and design standards and share beyond your team through writing and talks.
• Use AI tools and agentic workflows daily to multiply your own coding, design review, and operations.
• Educate, mentor, and grow engineers, driving best practices in design, coding, and testing.
