Job summary

Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Des Moines, IA, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the AI Operations Team. You will help design and run Apollo, Wellmark's governed AI platform, enabling safe, scalable enterprise AI adoption.

You will collaborate with product, security, data governance, and cloud engineers to build cloud-native services using TS/Node.js/Python, while guiding teams, applying CI/CD, and ensuring reliability and cost controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, MIS, or related field.
• 2+ years of software development experience or 6+ years of applicable experience.
• Experience with cloud-native apps and AI platforms.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to work in Agile teams.
• Experience with CI/CD and infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate core AI platform capabilities (model routing, prompt management, agent orchestration, runtimes).
• Collaborate with product, security, governance to ensure reliability and security.
• Lead adoption of architecture standards, automated testing, CI/CD, SDKs, IaC.
• Mentor engineers and guide teams through complex technical challenges.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and performance metrics.
