Job summary

Gusto in the United States is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to design, build, and scale the AI platform powering internal teams. You will own lifecycle from problem framing to production deployment, focusing on agent orchestration, RAG pipelines, and model serving to enable rapid, reliable AI-powered experiences.

You will mentor engineers, set technical standards, collaborate across product, design, and PMs, and stay at the forefront of AI/ML research.

Qualifications

• 12+ years building end-to-end AI/ML systems.
• Experience designing platform-level infrastructure used by other engineering teams.
• Hands-on with LLM-based apps and agentic workflows.
• Strong Python and software engineering fundamentals.
• Ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate with non-technical stakeholders.
• Ph.D. or Master’s in CS/ML is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable platform services for AI products.
• Lead technical strategy and architecture for the AI platform.
• Collaborate with app teams, PMs, and Designers to understand AI needs.
• Build, harden, and operate shared infrastructure powering intelligent agents.
• Stay current with AI/ML research and prototype new techniques.
• Establish validation, deployment, monitoring, and performance practices.
• Communicate strategy to executives and non-technical partners.
• Mentor engineers across teams.
