Gusto is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for AI Developer Tools to architect the AI platform that accelerates engineering. You will reduce developer friction with autonomous agents, RAG, and reliable AI pipelines, enabling teams to ship faster and more securely.

The role emphasizes leadership in AI infrastructure, collaboration with product and security teams, and a strong focus on producing reliable, scalable developer tooling across the org.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of systems engineering experience delivering distributed software.
• Proven production AI experience, including prompt engineering, RAG, and multi-agent workflows.
• Developer-first mindset focused on productivity and frictionless internal tools.

Responsibilities

• Architect AI core infrastructure and internal platform integration for LLMs.
• Lead engineering best practices for building with AI, incl. evals and guardrails.
• Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and security to ensure scalable, secure tooling.
• Improve feedback loops across the local-to-production lifecycle at scale.
