EY is seeking an experienced AI systems engineer to build and operate agents that span long-running workflows and enterprise integrations. You will shape execution loops, tooling, context, and safety controls while balancing determinism and autonomy in complex production environments.

You will join Challenger, EY’s program focused on reimagining services through applied AI, with small, focused teams delivering measurable business value and scalable tech.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.
• 9–12+ years of relevant experience in software or applied ML engineering.
• Strong track record shipping production systems with live behavior.
• Hands-on evidence of shipping large-language-model apps, agents, or complex model-driven workflows.
• Programming depth in Python, TypeScript, or similar languages.
• Experience with model APIs, structured outputs, retrieval, tool use, and evaluation.
• Experience with asynchronous work, state, concurrency, retries, and recovery.
• Experience implementing access boundaries and scoped authority.
• Evidence of improving live systems through traces, metrics, and incident analysis.
• Willingness to travel up to 50% and work in a hybrid capacity.

Responsibilities

• Choose the right execution model, designing agent architectures with deterministic steps or coordinated agents when justified.
• Build dependable tools with connectors, clear contracts, and safe error handling.
• Engineer agent behavior across planning, routing, delegation, retry, and handoff.
• Create durable context combining instructions, user state, and memory with provenance and access control.
• Bound agent authority with scoped identities, credentials, budgets, and containment points.
• Evaluate complete trajectories with tests for verified task success and safe operation.
• Operate long-running execution with durable state and graceful degradation.
• Make behavior observable by instrumenting traces and replaying production events.
• Protect user control with clear intervention points for inspection and safe resume.
• Build shared capability by cross-team collaboration and publishing reusable patterns.
