Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our accounting team supporting a growing construction company in southeastern North Carolina. This position will play an important role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting month-end close, monitoring job costs, and providing financial information to management.

The ideal candidate is an experienced accountant who understands that construction accounting is different from traditional general accounting. Experience with retainage, job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, construction payroll, equipment costs, subcontractors, and percentage-of-completion accounting is highly valued.

This is a hands-on position with significant responsibility and an opportunity to work closely with the CFO, project management, estimating, operations, and ownership.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Month-End Close

• Perform and oversee day-to-day general accounting activities.
• Prepare and post journal entries and maintain general ledger accounts.
• Perform monthly bank and balance-sheet reconciliations.
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
• Prepare supporting schedules and account reconciliations.
• Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies.
• Maintain accurate and organized accounting records.

Construction Accounting & Job Costing

• Maintain and review job-cost information for active construction projects.
• Assist with monthly WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion calculations.
• Review job costs for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification.
• Analyze budget-to-actual job performance and investigate significant variances.
• Work with project managers and operations personnel to resolve job-cost issues.
• Assist with project setup, cost codes, budgets, change orders, and cost transfers.
• Monitor subcontractor and vendor costs and ensure expenses are properly assigned to projects.
• Assist with equipment and equipment-cost accounting.

Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

• Review and support the accounts payable process, including vendor invoices, purchase orders, subcontractor invoices, and job-cost coding.
• Assist with accounts receivable, customer billings, retainage, and collections.
• Reconcile customer and vendor accounts as needed.
• Help ensure timely and accurate project billing.

Payroll & Compliance

• Assist with payroll accounting and payroll-related reconciliations.
• Review payroll allocations and ensure labor is properly assigned to jobs and cost codes.
• Assist with sales/use tax, payroll tax, and other accounting-related compliance requirements.
• Support annual review, tax returns, insurance, and banking requests.
• Prepare recurring financial reports and schedules for management.
• Assist the CFO with financial analysis and reporting.
• Provide information and analysis to help management understand project and company performance.
• Develop and improve accounting procedures, controls, and reporting processes.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3 - 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of accrual accounting and general ledger processes.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize competing deadlines, and follow issues through to resolution.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both accounting and operations personnel.

Preferred:

• Construction accounting experience.
• Experience with job costing and WIP accounting.
• Experience with commercial, industrial, residential, infrastructure, or similar construction.
• Experience with construction accounting software or ERP systems.
• Experience working with equipment-intensive construction operations.
