We are seeking a detail-oriented Senior Accountant to oversee financial accounting processes and support the accurate management of complex funding sources. In this role, you will play a key part in managing federal, state, and local grant accounting, ensuring financial records and reporting meet applicable regulatory and organizational requirements. You will collaborate closely with the Controller and teams across the organization to support budgeting, financial close activities, and audit preparation. Your expertise will help strengthen internal controls, improve financial processes, and ensure timely, reliable reporting for internal and external stakeholders. You will also monitor grant expenditures, analyze budget variances, and maintain compliance with funding agreements and accounting standards. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the financial integrity and effective management of a mission-driven organization.

Accountabilities

As Senior Accountant, you will manage and support a range of accounting activities, with a particular focus on grant financial management, regulatory compliance, and accurate financial reporting. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Support the administration of state and federal funding sources, including internal and external financial reporting.
  • Assist the Controller with developing and preparing grant and contract budgets for management review.
  • Conduct monthly budget monitoring and variance analysis for state and federal funding programs.
  • Support monthly and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, allocations, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare and submit cost-reimbursable grant invoices, financial reports, and vouchers in accordance with funder requirements and deadlines.
  • Reconcile grant-related accounts, investigate discrepancies, and make necessary adjustments to maintain accurate financial records.
  • Monitor grant budgets, expenditures, receivables, allocations, and projections to ensure alignment with funding agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal regulations, including OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), state and local grant requirements, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Maintain accurate and complete grant accounting records within the organization’s financial systems.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for funders, management, and regulatory authorities.
  • Evaluate internal controls by identifying potential risks, documenting existing processes, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing maintenance of internal controls specific to grant accounting.
  • Develop audit schedules and maintain supporting documentation for annual and other required audits.
  • Respond to external audit requests related to grants by gathering documentation and coordinating information with the CFO, Controller, and program teams.
  • Maintain a secure and organized database of grant-related financial documentation for compliance and historical reference.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to other grant accountants and cross-functional teams.
  • Perform additional accounting responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements

The ideal candidate brings strong accounting expertise, particularly in grant financial management, and the ability to manage complex reporting and compliance requirements with accuracy. You should be highly organized, comfortable working across multiple priorities, and capable of collaborating effectively while meeting strict financial deadlines.

  • Advanced degree in Accounting required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation strongly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of GAAP accounting experience, including monthly financial close, audits, and general accounting responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant accounting, including federal and state grant compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP standards, federal grant regulations, and internal control frameworks.
  • Technical understanding of applicable accounting laws, regulations, guidelines, and financial policies, with the ability to interpret and apply them appropriately.
  • Experience preparing grant budgets, monitoring expenditures, conducting variance analysis, and producing financial reports.
  • Familiarity with OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and state and local funding requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Experience working with ERP systems; Sage Intacct experience preferred.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet financial reporting deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with finance and non-finance teams.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, accountability, and independent leadership when needed, despite having no direct supervisory responsibilities.
