Career Blazers Nonprofit Search in Chicago, IL is seeking a Senior Accountant to oversee the organization’s accounts payable, general ledger, and financial reporting. You will support month-end close, budgeting, grants, audits, and internal controls while serving as the primary AP resource.

The role requires 7+ years of accounting experience in AP, GL, and nonprofit environments, with strong Excel and nonprofit grant knowledge. Hybrid work arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with expertise in accounts payable, general ledger management, and month/year-end close.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, grants, donor restrictions, and grant reporting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the full accounts payable cycle: invoices, reimbursements, payments, vendor maintenance, reconciliations, 1099 reporting.
  • Review invoices and POs for accuracy, approvals, compliance, and timely payment.
  • Prepare payments (ACH, wire, checks) and resolve discrepancies while maintaining vendor relationships.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and GL activity for AP, accruals, intercompany transactions.

As Senior Accountant, you will oversee the organization’s accounts payable function, ensuring invoices, employee reimbursements, vendor payments, and related transactions are processed accurately and on time. You will support month-end and year-end close, general ledger management, financial reporting, account reconciliations, budgeting, grants, audits, and internal controls while serving as the primary accounts payable resource for employees and vendors. Working collaboratively across the Finance team, you will help strengthen financial operations by identifying opportunities to improve processes, controls, and overall efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the full accounts payable cycle, including invoice processing, expense reimbursements, payment processing, vendor maintenance, reconciliations, and 1099 reporting
  • Review invoices, purchase orders, and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy, proper approvals, compliance, and timely payment
  • Prepare ACH, wire, and check payments while resolving payment discrepancies, maintaining vendor relationships, and serving as the primary accounts payable resource
  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity related to accounts payable, accruals, intercompany transactions, and other assigned accounts
  • Support month-end and year-end close by preparing reconciliations, schedules, financial analyses, and documentation for accurate financial reporting
  • Assist with financial statement preparation, management reporting, budget-to-actual analyses, budgeting, forecasting, and grant accounting activities
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for financial, grant, tax, and third-party audits while ensuring compliance with GAAP and organizational policies
  • Maintain accounts payable policies, internal controls, electronic records, and financial documentation to support accurate and efficient operations
  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance accounts payable workflows, financial controls, and operational efficiency
  • Collaborate across the Finance team on cross-functional accounting activities, system enhancements, special projects, and department operations
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with expertise in accounts payable, general ledger management, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end close
  • Experience managing the full accounts payable cycle, including ACH, wire transfers, checks, purchase orders, vendor maintenance, employee expense reimbursements, and 1099 reporting
  • Knowledge of GAAP, accounting systems, and Microsoft Office, with advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, including grant funding, donor restrictions, and grant reporting, strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify discrepancies, improve processes, and ensure financial accuracy
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively across teams
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain confidentiality while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work onsite Monday through Friday during standard business hours
