Are you an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant, SEMH TA, SEND Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Assistant or Behaviour Mentor looking for your next opportunity in Tipton, West Midlands?

Balfor Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND and SEMH school in Tipton from September 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated Teaching Assistant with experience working in SEMH, SEND, Alternative Provision (AP), Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), behaviour support or specialist education.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant in Tipton, you will work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and the wider education team to provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils aged 11-19.

You will support young people with SEMH and SEND needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning, manage emotions, develop positive behaviours, improve social skills and build confidence, resilience and essential life skills.

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play an important role in helping pupils engage positively with education and develop the skills they need to progress.

You will work as part of a dedicated teaching and pastoral team, providing consistent support to pupils who may experience challenging behaviour, emotional regulation difficulties, low engagement, social difficulties or barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities – SEMH Teaching Assistant

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant / SEMH TA, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and SEND needs.
  • Supporting young people aged 11-19 within a specialist SEND and SEMH education setting.
  • Supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, challenging behaviour and additional learning needs.
  • Helping pupils manage emotions, develop resilience and build appropriate social and communication skills.
  • Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
  • Acting as a Behaviour Mentor and positive role model for young people.
  • Building positive, trusting and consistent relationships with pupils.
  • Acting as a key adult and providing emotional and pastoral support.
  • Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff to identify and respond to individual pupil needs.
  • Supporting pupils to overcome barriers to learning and engagement.
  • Adapting and modifying lessons, learning resources and classroom activities to meet individual needs.
  • Helping pupils access the curriculum and participate positively in learning.
  • Supporting the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) and risk assessments.
  • Promoting positive behaviour and maintaining a calm, safe, structured and supportive learning environment.
  • Using appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation strategies when responding to challenging behaviour.
  • Following school policies relating to behaviour, safeguarding, risk management and pupil wellbeing.
  • Monitoring and recording pupil progress, behaviour, engagement and development.
  • Providing feedback to teachers, pastoral staff and relevant professionals.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, families and external professionals where appropriate.
  • Supporting pupils to develop confidence, independence, resilience and essential life skills.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Requirements

The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant / SEMH TA will ideally have:

  • Previous experience working as an SEMH Teaching Assistant, SEMH TA, SEND Teaching Assistant, PRU Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or Behaviour Support AssistantEssential.
  • Experience working within SEMH, SEND, Alternative Provision, PRU or specialist education settingsEssential.
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs, SEND and challenging behaviour.
  • Experience providing 1:1 and small-group pupil support.
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management and positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Experience using appropriate de-escalation techniques when managing challenging behaviour.
  • A Level 2 or Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent – desirable.
  • A degree in Psychology, Education or a related subject – desirable.
  • A nurturing, patient and empathetic approach to supporting young people.
  • The ability to remain calm, consistent and resilient under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with young people who may experience barriers to learning.
  • Adaptability and resilience when supporting pupils with a range of complex or challenging needs.
  • A genuine passion for SEMH education, SEND support, behaviour management and helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
