Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, is responsible for maintaining a secure and orderly environment and protection of the grounds and off-site buildings for Corewell Health, to include safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. This position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification and will be able to arrest for misdemeanors offenses and must complete the Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.
Essential Functions
- Patrol campus on foot and in vehicle (or on bike as assigned). Offer assistance such as unlocking doors inside or doing motor assists outside, and be observant to suspicious activities and security violations.
- Accept and perform duties at assigned posts, assisting patients, visitors, and employees. Enforce rules, regulations, and policies of the hospital as appropriate.
- Monitor phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic in the Security Operations Center.
- Provide safety and security reports to internal stakeholders and management, including performance, improvement strategies, and compliance issues.
- Complete reports or logs daily on activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls, lost articles, and send reports to managers and executives.
- Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off-site locations, prepare reports, and cooperate with law enforcement.
- Provide security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as needed for safety.
- Respond to inquiries, direct visitors, and prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Use verbal de-escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors without escalation.
- Assist nursing staff with physical management or restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
- Use defensive tactics and appropriate force continuum if necessary to safeguard lives and well-being.
- May be required to carry and utilize electronic weapons, tasers, and other weapons as per policy.
- Provide CPR and first aid in emergencies until medical staff arrive.
- Assist with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing protective gear.
- Report and respond to fire and safety hazards, inspect firefighting equipment, and assist in emergency drills.
- Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
At locations where PA 330 is in place, duties include:
- Utilize Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on hospital property under Michigan Law (PA 330).
- Write citations and enforce ordinances under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local laws.
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 2-3 years’ law enforcement-related experience (e.g., police officer, security, military police)
- Ability to lead and direct in emergencies
- Current CPL license and successful Taser training completion
- Driver's license (Michigan)
- Basic Life Support (BLS), AED, and First Aid certifications (within 90 days)
Preferred
- Graduation from Police Academy or related experience in crowd control and security
