Job summary

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a Section Head, Accelerator R&D to lead and manage the Accelerator R&D Section. This role directs Accelerator Physics, Beam Cooling, and Polarimetry groups, guiding research, engineering, and operations for the Electron-Ion Collider and related accelerator programs.

The candidate will shape priorities, staffing plans, and resource allocation, while promoting safety, collaboration, and high performance across the Laboratory and with external partners.

Qualifications

• PhD in Accelerator Physics, Physics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in accelerator science, accelerator physics, or accelerator engineering, including at least 6 years in leadership/management.
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary scientific teams.
• Expertise in beam physics, beam cooling, beam dynamics, beam instrumentation, polarimetry, or accelerator systems.
• Experience supporting design, commissioning, operation, or upgrade of complex accelerator facilities.
• Ability to manage scientific programs, personnel, and resources.
• Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences and executive-level reporting.

Responsibilities

• Establish the strategic vision and organizational structure for the Accelerator R&D Section.
• Provide direct supervision of Section Leaders.
• Recruit, mentor, and evaluate scientific staff.
• Foster an inclusive, collaborative, high-performing culture.
• Promote operational excellence and continuous improvement across the Section.
• Lead scientific and technical activities supporting EIC and accelerator programs.
• Coordinate with multiple divisions and project teams to align capabilities with priorities.
