Job summary

The Village of Pleasant Prairie is seeking a Seasonal Utility Maintenance Worker to aid in operating, maintaining, and repairing the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Hours are 6:00 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m., four days a week, for about 960 hours across six months with a rotating 10‑hour schedule and occasional overtime. Duties include monitoring work orders, inspecting and repairing systems, operating equipment, and responding to emergencies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License preferred.

  • Respond to emergency repairs of water mains, sewers, and pumping equipment.
  • Follow Village policies, safety rules, and PPE requirements.

The Seasonal Utility Maintenance Worker reports to the Utility Crew Lead and the Utility Superintendent. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide assistance in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Village’s water distribution system and wastewater collection system. Hours are 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 4 days a week. This position is scheduled for approximately 960 hours or six months with an average of 40 hours per week. Workdays may fluctuate on a rotating 10 hour schedule basis with some weekend, holiday, and overtime work required.

Job Duties
  • Utilizes a PC based computer to monitor work orders, record work, and generate various reports.
  • Performs inspection, maintenance, installation, and repair of the Village’s water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Familiar with the operations, objectives and equipment of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Assist with maintaining and repairing of sanitary sewer collection systems, pipe, service lines, hydrants (including painting), cleans wet wells as needed, fittings, and minor maintenance on valve exercising and hydrant flushing
  • Assist with repairing water and wastewater mains and laterals and work on utility service laterals or water mains below the surface.
  • Assist in the operation of a high pressure water pump, determine and correct causes of sewer service interruptions, and safely operate sewer cleaning equipment.
  • Respond to emergency repairs of water mains, sanitary sewers and pumping equipment.
  • Lift manhole covers and climb down manholes, direct and operate the power flusher and the vacuum unit in conjunction with the power flusher while in a manhole.
  • Operates utility maintenance equipment including, but not limited to, skid steer, loader, road saw, and fork truck.
  • Assists in snowplow, salting and deicing operations.
  • Utilizes safe practices and takes protective measures as required, including wearing all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Follows all Village policies and procedures, and Village codes and ordinances.
  • Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Public Works Department.
Physical
  • Essential job functions of this position require a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, kneeling, climbing, and lifting and carrying a range of weight up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be capable of physically demanding work in inclement weather for an extended period of time and in areas of noxious odors and smells, in wet or muddy areas, work in close proximity to loud and moving equipment and work in an environment where the noise level is usually moderately loud.
  • Must have the ability to recognize possible exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as carbon monoxide, gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfate, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact.
  • Frequent public interaction, which requires the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Educational, Certifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation policies and procedures.
