Job summary

Village of Palatine is seeking a Maintenance Worker to support the Utilities, Streets, and Forestry divisions. The role covers water/wastewater maintenance, street maintenance, and urban forestry tasks in a full-time municipal setting.

Responsibilities include operating various equipment, performing inspections, and assisting with snow plowing and emergency response. CDL within six months is required or preferred; union benefits apply.

Qualifications

  • Valid Illinois CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • EPA Class C Drinking Water Operator certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain water supply and distribution systems, inspect, repair, and replace mains, wells, pumps, fire hydrants, valves, and elevated/ground storage tanks.
  • Maintain sanitary and storm sewer systems; inspect, repair, and replace mains, lift stations, basins, inlets, and manholes.
  • Monitor SCADA to control water and wastewater operations; perform water meter installations and shutoffs.
  • Locate underground utilities per J.U.L.I.E. requests; operate light-heavy equipment for utilities and streets.
  • Assist in snow plowing, emergency response, and event support; update GIS inventory.

Maintenance Worker

This position will primarily be assigned to the Utilities Division, but will be expected to assist in other Divisions as directed.

Job Description:

Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains the water supply and distribution system, including inspection, repair, and replacement of water mains, well and pump stations, fire hydrants, valves and valve boxes, b-boxes, and elevated and ground storage tanks. Collects drinking water samples and prepares reports for regulatory testing and compliance.
  • Maintains the sanitary and storm sewer systems, including inspection, repair and replacement of sewer mains, lift stations, retention and detention basins, inlets, catch basins, manholes, and culverts. Performs sewer inspections, televising, and flushing.
  • Maintains the creek system, including inspections, clearing obstructions, and outfall and erosion repairs.
  • Repairs and replaces concrete curbs, sidewalks, and driveways.
  • Monitors Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to control water and wastewater systems.
  • Maintains and installs water meters and performs water shut offs and turn-ons.
  • Locates underground utilities in response to J.U.L.I.E. requests.
  • Operates a variety of light-duty to heavy-duty trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems; streets; and the urban forest.
  • Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment. Reports malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Assists with the preparations and tear down/cleanup for events, festivals, and special functions.
  • Maintains availability on-call to respond to emergency situations.
  • Assists with snow plowing and ice control operations.
  • Updates the Village’s Geographic Information System (GIS) inventory of water and sewer infrastructure, signs, and the urban forest.
When assigned to the Streets Division:
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs streets and roadways, curbs, sidewalks, and parking lots.
  • Performs pothole patching, street sweeping, and leaf collection.
  • Designs and fabricates signs using design software and computerized fabricating equipment. Installs, maintains, and repairs all Village signage.
  • Hauls leaves, asphalt, spoils, debris, and other materials.
  • Installs temporary signage and road closures for special events.
  • Applies and maintains pavement markings.
When assigned to the Forestry Division:
  • Maintains the urban forest, including planting, removal, stump grinding, trimming, spraying, and general care of trees and shrubs.
  • Mows Village property and provides turf care.
  • Maintains landscape beds, medians, pots and planters, including planting, fertilizing, and general care.
  • Performs brush collection and chipping.
  • Prepares and installs civic displays, seasonal decorations, and holiday lighting, and assists with landscape improvements.
Qualifications:
  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery such as heavy-duty trucks, aerial trucks, end loaders, backhoes, pavers and rollers, excavating equipment, post installers and removers, televising cameras, sewer jetters, forklifts, hand and power tools, chainsaws, mowers, string trimmers, and brush chippers and requires the ability to maintain and repair complex equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water supply and distribution, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems.
  • Knowledge of SCADA operations and ability to use SCADA software.
  • Ability to exert regular and sustained heavy physical effort with an emphasis on climbing and balancing which also involves stooping, crouching, and lifting, pushing and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, 20 to 50 pounds, and may occasionally involve objects and materials up to 125 pounds.
  • Position is performed in both inside and outside environmental conditions, under fluctuating and extreme temperatures and weather conditions, with some exposure to noise.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, follow safe work practices, communicate verbally and in writing, and demonstrate excellence in customer service.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Ability to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day.
  • Must be eligible for employment in the U.S. and pass a pre-employment background check and medical and drug screening (including cannabis).
Education, Experience and Licenses:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Prior experience as a laborer or maintenance worker in a utility or municipal setting is preferred.
  • Possess a valid Illinois Class A or B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements, or have the ability to obtain a commercial learner’s permit within two months of hire and CDL within six months of hire.
  • Certification as an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Class C Drinking Water Operator is preferred.
Salary:

Hiring rate: $34.37 per hour. Full range: $34.37 through $49.78 per hour.

Hours:

Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, plus availability for overtime.

Employment Duration:

Full time, non-exempt position.
