Job summary

The Village of Bloomingdale, Illinois is seeking a Maintenance Worker II in Public Works to perform semi-skilled to skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of streets, water and sewer systems and related public works and utility facilities.

The role requires operating heavy trucks and equipment, maintaining logs, responding to emergencies, and supporting utility, streets, buildings and forestry duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with vocational/technical training in construction trades.
  • Two to three years of public works/utility maintenance, construction and repair experience.
  • Certifications in First Aid and CPR and a valid Illinois Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works systems and utilities.
  • Prepares and maintains logs and reports; maintains labor, time and materials logs.
  • Maintains on-call availability and may work overtime, nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Assists with snow plowing, ice control, and emergency response as needed.
  • Performs inspections and minor repairs on vehicles, equipment and infrastructure.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled tasks in the maintenance,

repair and construction of streets, water and sewer systems and related public works and utility facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all

inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Operates a variety of heavy trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public

works systems and utilities.

Prepares and maintains a variety of logs and reports; maintains labor, time and materials logs.

Assists with snow plowing and ice control functions.

Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment; reports malfunctions to supervisor.

Assists with the preparations and tear-down/clean up for events, festivals and special functions.

Maintains availability on call to respond to emergency situations.

Position may require the employee to carry a pager/telecommuting device, respond to call-backs and may

require overtime work and work on nights, holidays and weekends.

When Assigned to Utilities:

Maintains water and sewer system components and infrastructure; inspects, repairs and maintains main

lines, sanitary and storm sewers and lift stations; repairs manholes; maintains and flushes hydrants;

operates SCADA systems to monitor conditions; maintains b-boxes; maintains and exercises valves.

Performs physical labor in excavating, trenching, and shoring, repairing water main breaks, etc. Restores

landscaping after excavations and construction.

Updates and maintains records of locations of valves, b-boxes and water mains.

May conducts locates for water mains, sanitary and storm sewers called in by contractors.

When Assigned to Customer Service/Meter Maintenance:

Provides customer service to utility customers; interacts with Utility Billing personnel to assist in providing

Performs meter/remote installations; calibrates and tests large meters; bench tests water meters for

accuracy; performs meter turn-ons/offs; reads and rereads meters.

When Assigned to Streets:

Maintains and repairs streets and roadways; performs asphalt and concrete repairs; repairs curbs and

sidewalks; seals cracks and patches potholes; applies traffic control stripes and cross walks; grades

shoulder gravel; clears roads during hazardous weather or other conditions including floods. Maintains

street signs.

Assists with parkway, roadway and grate cleaning.

Repairs and replaces mail boxes.

Assists with forestry functions; trims trees, removes brush, etc.

When Assigned to Buildings and Grounds:

Maintains buildings and grounds; inspects, maintains and repairs mechanical systems including HVAC

systems; tests alarm systems and documents results; performs minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry

repairs; maintains door locking systems; repairs fixtures and furniture; prepares related reports.

When Assigned to Forestry:

Performs branch collection and storm-damage pick-ups.

Maintains ROW turf and ornamental landscaping; mows, weeds and cleans up.

Maintains parkway trees; prunes, mulches, waters and sprays, etc.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other duties as assigned and required.

May perform welding or fabrication functions.

Provides assistance to other Public Works Divisions as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent with vocational/technical training in the construction trades or a related

field with two to three years of public works/utility maintenance, construction and repair experience, or any

equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills

and abilities for this job. Position requires certifications in First Aid and CPR and a valid Illinois Class A

Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.

personnel, other Village departments, vendors, residents, seasonal laborers, contractors, and the public.

Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive and/or advisory data and information such

as a variety or reports, inventories, maps, JULIE locates, logs, time sheets, customer contact sheets,

architectural and as-built drawings, welding schematics, invoices, schedules, blueprints, service requests,

procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Utilization:

Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery such as heavy equipment and trucks, welding

equipment, hand and power tools, hydraulic tools, pumps, landscaping equipment, mechanical and HVAC

equipment requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments.

Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.

Mathematical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; and to calculate

percentages and decimals.

Functional Reasoning:

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in

written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify

methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.

Situational Reasoning:

Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving

the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria

that are clearly measurable or verifiable.

Physical Ability:

Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained heavy physical effort with an emphasis on climbing

and balancing which also involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, pushing and pulling

moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty to fifty pounds; and may occasionally involve objects and

materials up to 125 pounds.

Sensory Requirements:

Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors,

shapes and sounds associated with job‑related objects, materials and tasks.

Ability to work under conditions that require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature and

noise extremes, machinery, chemicals, or disease. Positions may work in confined spaces. Exposure to

environmental conditions may cause discomfort and presents a risk of injury.
