Job description

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker for weekend support in the Parks & Recreation department. Parks Maintenance Workers get the opportunity to spend time outside in the City’s 72 parks and miles of greenway! Work is variable and can include mowing, weedeating, ensuring athletic fields are ready for games, bathroom custodial services, trash collection, etc.

What you’ll be doing:

• Operates an assortment of hand and power tools used in landscaping and mowing activities.
• Operates lawn mowers and string trimmers to cut and trim fields and other grassed areas; pulls weeds from flower beds and other landscaped areas; drags athletic fields, applies lime to mark boundaries, and sprays herbicides and pesticides.
• Picks up debris and performs routine custodial services including cleaning park restrooms.
• Loads and unloads material on and off of trucks.
• Maintains activity weather-related.
• Provides weather-related maintenance.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance of fueling equipment and fuel vehicles. Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs and assists in repair work.
• Responsible for unlocking and locking park facilities and equipment.
• Positions signs, marking cones, and flags to identify work areas.
• Provides event support by setting up tables, chairs, and/or tents.
• Performs other similar duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

• At least 16 years of age by the first day of employment.
• Valid Driver's License preferred.
• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.

• Scheduling is incredibly flexible and the Parks and Recreation Department is able to work with candidates to create a schedule that works best for them including opportunities to work early mornings, afternoons, evenings to cover department weekend shifts.

SKAs/Performance Aptitudes:

• Ability and willingness to perform a variety of duties from mowing and landscaping to trash removal and cleaning of facilities/restrooms as needed.
• Capable of working outside in all types of weather for prolonged periods of time and in unpleasant conditions.
• Skilled in providing excellent customer service.
• Ability to stand, walk and bend for long periods of time.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly; may provide event support including setting up tables, chairs, tents and electrical boxes as well as lifting equipment into vehicles.
• Basic knowledge of record keeping and daily activity logs.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
• Suited to working independently and with limited supervision.
• Knowledgeable in the use of basic hand tools and small power tools.
