Location: Norfolk

Position Type: Full-Time / Temp to Hire

Pay Rate: $15.00 – $16.00

Hours: 6AM-4:30PM/ Tuesday- Friday

Position: Seamstress / Industrial Sewer

Position Overview

Our manufacturing facility is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Seamstress / Industrial Sewer to join our production team.

In this role, you will operate heavy-duty industrial sewing machines (single-needle, double-needle, overlock, and binding equipment) to stitch, bind, and construct mattress covers, borders, quilt panels, and related components. You will play a vital role in ensuring that every product meets high standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Industrial Sewing Operations: Operate heavy-duty industrial sewing equipment (single/double needle, overlock, surge, and binding attachment machines) to assemble mattress borders, covers, inner fire-retardant (FR) socks, and pillow-top components.
  • Material Loading & Machine Setup: Thread machines, change bobbins, adjust thread tension, and select appropriate needles and presser feet based on fabric and foam weight.
  • Precision Stitching: Align fabric, foam layers, fiber, and ticking to ensure clean, straight seams without fraying, puckering, or skipped stitches.
  • Quality Assurance & Inspection: Inspect finished work regularly against production spec sheets for correct stitch counts, proper seam allowance, and overall appearance. Identify defective seams and repair them promptly.
  • Material Handling & Prep: Retrieve cut fabric, quilt panels, and raw materials from storage areas as needed. Measure and trim excess fabric, thread tails, or borders using hand shears or rotary cutters.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform basic routine maintenance on assigned equipment, including oiling machinery, cleaning lint and debris from needle beds, and changing broken needles.
  • Safety & Workplace Standards: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workstation. Follow all safety guidelines, ergonomics standards, and plant operating procedures established by the facility and regulatory agencies.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with lead sewers, panel cutters, and mattress builders to maintain smooth workflow and hit production volume targets.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Experience: Previous experience operating industrial sewing machines (single needle, double needle, overlock, or heavy-duty apparel/upholstery/bedding machines) preferred. Experience working with thick, multi-layer textiles is a plus.
  • Physical Demands: Able to lift and push/pull up to 35–50 lbs regularly; strong hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate heavy, bulky fabric rolls and bedding components.
  • Math & Measurement: Basic math skills with the ability to read a tape measure/ruler and work with simple fractions/inches.
  • Detail-Oriented: High attention to detail with an eye for straight lines, uniform tension, and flawless finishing.
  • Reliability: Strong attendance record, positive attitude, and willingness to work as part of a dedicated team.
