Job summary

Vanguard Furniture Company in Virginia, Hillsville, VA is seeking a Sewer - Border to operate a border machine and assemble cushion covers for upholstery. You will read tickets, select proper threads, and join fabric pieces to meet quality standards.

This role requires standing for long shifts, daily tolerances for lifting up to 20 lbs, and adherence to safety guidelines. The position runs Monday through Friday, with overtime on Saturdays as needed; accommodations are available for

• Must be able to read ticket and job notes for directions.
• Must be knowledgeable in sewing methods and be able to complete job to quality specifications.
• Sew piece according to sewing notes.
• English required for understanding of ticket, job notes and directions.

Responsibilities

• Operate border machine to walk borders around to fit cushions for fabric pieces for upholstering.
• Remove cover from bins and separate (unbundle) to prepare for sewing.
• Inspect fabric/material for any flaws and/or defects.
• Select thread according to colors of fabric.
• Join pieces together according to sewing notes using sewing machine.
• Align pieces and any trimmings following seams, edges or markings on parts.
• Walk borders around to fit cushion top.
• Check for puckering or bad seams.
• Scan ticket to show work is complete.
• Responsible for fixing own repairs before starting on new piece.
• Maintain neat and orderly work station.
• Wear required safety glasses.
• Work safely and report unsafe conditions to Department Supervisor.
• Performs other duties as required by supervisor.

Position Summary

Operates border machine to walk borders around to fit cushions for fabric pieces for upholstering.

Position Responsibilities

• Must be able to operate border machine to run borders thru.
• Remove cover from bins and separate (unbundle) to prepare for sewing.
• Inspect fabric/material for any flaws and/or defects.
• Selects thread according to colors of fabric.
• Joins pieces together according to sewing notes using sewing machine.
• Aligns pieces and any trimmings following seams, edges or markings on parts.
• Walks borders around to fit cushion top.
• Checks for any puckering or bad seams.
• Scans ticket to show work is complete.
• Responsible for fixing their own repairs before starting on new piece.
• Maintains neat and orderly work station.
• Wears required safety glasses.
• Works safely and reports unsafe conditions to Department Supervisor.
• Performs other duties as required by supervisor.

• Keep sewing notebook updated and in neat order.
• English required for understanding of ticket, job notes and directions.

Physical demands and work environment

• Lift / Carry: Frequently lifting less than 20 lbs.; occasionally lifting in excess of 35 lbs.; team lift greater

weights.

• Push / Pull: Frequently pushing or pulling fabric to/from/on workstation weighing less than 10 lbs.
• Sitting: Must be able to sit 8+ hours. Must be able to sit continuously for majority of work schedule.

• Reach / Handle / Grasp: Repetitive use of feet and hands required. Must be able to use sewing machine and reach all areas of workstation. Repetitive pinching/pulling of fabric/leather depending on your job.

• Tool Usage: Required to operate a sewing machine and use scissors on/off during entire shift to cut welt cords and clip corners.

• Environment: Indoors, environmentally controlled; heated / air-conditioned.

• Vision: Color Determination, observation of patterns, fabric textures and dye tones for quality control.
• Near Acuity: Requires close vision of less than 3 feet, with or without corrective lenses, for precision.

Monday thru Friday, 6:30am to 3:00pm; As needed on Saturdays and Weekly Overtime.
