Qualifications

• PhD, or MSc with 2+ years’ experience, or Bachelor's with 4+ years’ experience.
• Deep training in cryoEM data processing (SPA, tomography or MicroED).
• Experience building custom data analysis pipelines for cryoEM workflows.
• Familiar with HPC clusters and Linux command line.
• Experience with EPU and CryoSPARC software packages.
• Strong documentation and reproducible development practices.
• Evidence of publications, presentations or innovation.
• Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Meet with structural biologists to understand workflows and translate needs into software requirements.
• Develop, test, document, and maintain software tools for cryoEM experiments.
• Implement reproducible software practices with GitLab, testing, and dependency management.
• Validate tools against datasets, troubleshoot, and refine workflows with scientist feedback.
• Document assumptions, input requirements, limitations, data provenance, and outputs.
• Present progress and recommendations to scientific stakeholders.

Job Description

Aptask Global Workforce (AGW) is seeking a Scientist for an Onsite position with a Global Biotechnology Company located in Thousand Oaks, CA. This is a 12+ month contract opportunity.

This role is for an early-career structural biologist to develop robust, user-centered automation workflows for cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM) data processing. The ideal candidate will combine a practical understanding of structural biology and cryoEM with strong computational skills to improve data traceability and create standardized, reusable analysis tools. This position requires working with command-line environments and high-performance computing (HPC).

Responsibilities:

• Meet with structural biologists to understand current workflows, identify pain points, and translate scientific needs into clear software requirements
• Develop, test, document, and maintain software tools to support structural biology experiments
• Implement reproducible software practices, including GitLab version control, code review, testing, and dependency management
• Validate tools against representative datasets, troubleshoot failures, and refine workflows based on scientist feedback
• Maintain clear documentation of assumptions, input requirements, limitations, data provenance, and expected outputs
• Present progress, tool demonstrations, and technical recommendations to scientific stakeholders

Requirements:

• Doctorate degree OR Master's degree and 2 years of experience OR Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience
• Deep training and expertise in cryoEM data processing (single particle analysis, tomography or MicroED)
• Experience developing custom data analysis pipelines utilizing scripting and multiple programs for cryoEM data analysis
• Familiarity with working in high-performance computing clusters and at the Linux command line
• Familiarity with EPU and CryoSPARC software packages
• Experience developing scripts, data-processing pipelines, reports, or scientific visualizations
• Strong documentation and reproducible-development practices
• Solid record of scientific publications, presentations or technology innovation
• Highly organized, with great attention to detail, strong communication and excellent interpersonal skills

Desired skills:

• Experience in at least one programming language
• Experience with version control (Git)
• Ability to translate scientific user needs into practical software requirements
• Experience with x-ray crystallography data processing
• Experience with Relion, Pymol, ChimeraX, XDS, Refmac, Coot, or similar software packages

Pay range:

up to $42.16 per hour
