Job summary

Wicomico County Public Schools is seeking a School Security Employee in Salisbury, MD, to help maintain a safe and orderly learning environment. You will monitor facilities, support access control, and respond to safety concerns in collaboration with administrators and local responders.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, background checks, and the ability to obtain required training and certifications within the stated timelines. Evening, weekend, and summer shifts may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Ability to pass required background checks.
• Ability to stay calm and exercise sound judgment under stress.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work with diverse student populations.
• Must obtain MCSS School Security Employee training within 6 months.
• First Aid, AED, CPR certifications within 12 months.
• Excellent attendance and punctuality.
• Experience in security, law enforcement, military or related public safety preferred.
• Experience with de-escalation, crisis response preferred.
• Familiarity with security technology and emergency procedures preferred.
• Experience in educational or youth-focused environment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a visible presence on school grounds to deter unsafe behavior.
• Monitor entrances, hallways, and exterior grounds.
• Support access control by verifying IDs and visitor management.
• Report safety concerns to administration promptly.
• Follow directives of administrators.
• Be an active member of the school safety team for emergency readiness.
• Monitor CCTV systems and report issues.
• Assist with emergency procedures and drills.
• Respond to incidents in coordination with administration and responders.
• Use de-escalation techniques to manage conflicts.
• Complete incident reports per district guidelines.
• Interact with students respectfully.
• Maintain order during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and events.
• Patrol interior and exterior of building and campus.
• Verify exterior doors are secure.
• Verify no disturbances in bathrooms.
• Be a role model and contribute to welcoming environment.
• Communicate with staff and security leadership.
• Coordinate with SRO and law enforcement when directed.
• Participate in safety meetings and trainings.
• Willing to work evenings, weekends, and summer hours as needed.
• Utilize security tech such as cameras, access control, radios.
• Report equipment issues.
• Follow district policies and laws.
• Maintain confidentiality per FERPA.
• Perform duties ethically and without discrimination.
• Ability to stand and patrol for extended periods.
• Respond quickly to emergencies.
• May require evenings/weekends for events.
• Other duties as assigned.
