GENERAL OVERVIEW
The School Security Employee supports a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment by monitoring school facilities, assisting with prevention and response to safety concerns, and supporting students, staff, and visitors. This position focuses on prevention, visibility, communication, and collaboration while maintaining a positive and safe school climate consistent with the educational mission of Wicomico County Public Schools. School Security Employees serve as a key component of the district’s comprehensive school safety framework.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to pass required background checks in accordance with Maryland public school requirements.
Demonstrated ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in stressful situations.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
Must obtain MCSS School Security Employee training within 6 months of hire, as required by law (training information provided by the district).
Be able to obtain First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications within the first 12 months of employment and maintain certifications every two years thereafter.
Evidence of good job attendance and punctuality.
Prior experience in school security, law enforcement, military service, or related public safety roles is preferred.
Training or experience in de-escalation, conflict resolution, or crisis response is preferred.
Familiarity with school-based security technology and emergency procedures is preferred.
Experience working in an educational or youth-focused environment is preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain a visible presence on school grounds to deter unsafe behavior and promote a sense of safety.
Monitor entrances, hallways, common areas, and exterior grounds in accordance with established procedures.
Support access control by assisting with monitoring visitors, verifying identification, and following visitor management protocols.
Observe and report safety concerns, suspicious behavior, or policy violations to school administration (and School Security Manager if applicable) promptly.
Follow directives of building and district administrators, including the Supervisor of SSI and the Safe Schools Coordinator.
Serve as an active member of the building’s school safety team to prepare for emergency response and readiness.
Monitor CCTV video surveillance systems throughout the day and report safety concerns promptly to administration (and Campus Security Manager if applicable).
Assist with implementation of emergency procedures, including lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-place, and drills. Assist building administrators with all emergency and crisis drills.
Respond appropriately to incidents such as disturbances, medical emergencies, or safety threats in coordination with school administrators and emergency responders.
Assist administration by using de-escalation techniques to help manage conflicts or disruptive behavior when appropriate and safe to do so.
Complete accurate and timely incident reports in accordance with district guidelines.
Interact with students in a respectful, professional, and supportive manner that promotes trust and positive relationships.
Support school administrators with maintaining order during arrival, dismissal, lunch shifts, and school events.
Monitor and patrol the interior and exterior of the school building and campus before, during, and after school to ensure the security of the school facility and the safety and well‐being of students, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Responsible for verifying that the exterior doors are secure throughout the school day.
Responsible for verifying no disturbances in school bathrooms throughout the school day.
Serve as a role model for appropriate behavior and contribute to a welcoming school environment.
Communicate effectively with school administrators, teachers, support staff, and district security leadership.
Coordinate with SRO and local law enforcement or emergency services when directed by administration.
Participate in safety meetings, briefings, and required trainings.
Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and summer hours as needed and approved (athletics, graduations, summer school, etc.) as needed.
Effectively utilize and monitor security technology systems such as surveillance cameras, access control systems, radios, emergency management, and visitor management tools as assigned.
Report equipment issues or system malfunctions promptly.
Follow all district policies, procedures, and applicable Maryland laws and regulations.
Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information in accordance with FERPA and district guidelines.
Perform duties ethically, impartially, and without discrimination.
Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods.
Ability to respond quickly to emergencies, including climbing stairs or moving across campus.
May require work during evenings, weekends, or special events as needed and approved.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
