Job summary

The Craven County Government seeks a School Resource Officer (SRO) to maintain campus security with authority to arrest if required and to act as a law enforcement education resource within the classroom.

The SRO will work to divert minor infractions from courts by counseling families and providing student support, mentoring, and substance abuse and violence prevention education. Training includes D.A.R.E. and annual updates.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school and possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate.
• One year of experience in law enforcement work or an equivalent combination of experience and training is preferred.
• Certification as a law enforcement officer and completion of all requirements set by the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

• Patrol Craven County schools to detect and deter crime and respond to calls for assistance at their school.
• Enforce federal, state, and local laws and assist school officials with enforcement of board policies and regulations.
• Develop classroom presentations on law enforcement education topics for students.
• Provide counseling, mentoring, and support to students and address problems to divert minor infractions from the criminal court system.
• Coordinate D.A.R.E. curriculum and programs; conduct classes and events related to student life and crime prevention.
• Maintain communication with school officials via radio or telephone and assist with special events and training.
