Job summary

Department of Education of the City of New York is seeking a Parent Coordinator to engage and involve parents in the school community. The role includes outreach to families, organizing meetings, and coordinating with parent associations and community groups to address issues raised by parents.

The position requires collaboration with the principal and staff to create a welcoming environment and ensure timely attention to parent and community concerns, including those of limited English

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree plus two years of community work experience; or an Associate’s degree plus four years; or a high school diploma plus six years.
• Familiarity with the NYC public school system preferred.
• Bilingual abilities preferred where non-English speaking populations exist.
• Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Increase parent involvement by working with school and community organizations.
• Facilitate parent and school community concerns including policies and facilities.
• Conduct outreach to engage parents in children’s education.
• Convene regular parent meetings and events on key concerns.
• Attend parent meetings with the principal when appropriate.
• Assist in establishing bylaws and elections for parent associations per regulations.
• Serve as liaison to central and field-based parent support staff.
• Maintain contact with community organizations providing educational services.
• Organize back-to-school and other events to welcome parents.
