Job summary

Long Beach Unified School District is seeking a nutrition service assistant to assist in preparing and serving food at a school site or central kitchen. You will help maintain clean facilities, handle cash transactions, and assist with stock and inventory.

The role requires basic education and dependable work ethic, with on-site duties including cooking assistance, sanitation, and operating a POS system. Substitutes are paid hourly and work as needed.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of standard kitchen utensils and equipment.
• Knowledge of general kitchen sanitation and safety practices.
• Knowledge of basic food preparation methods including washing, cutting and assembling food items.
• Knowledge of basic math and cashiering skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

• Assist in quantity preparation, packaging and serving of hot and cold menu items at an assigned school site or central kitchen.
• Assist in maintaining nutrition service facilities and equipment in a clean and sanitary condition; clean serving counters, tables, chairs and equipment; wash trays, pots, pans, utensils and serving equipment.
• Participate in assembly line food preparation and packaging activities; wash, cut, measure and scoop food items; assemble ingredients.
• Package and wrap food items; remove food packs from assembly line and place on storage racks.
• Assist with panning food and placing trays in ovens and warmers; take and record temperatures of food; transport food on carts.
• Assist in set up of food items, trays, condiments and utensils; serve food to students and staff; perform cashiering duties; count money and make correct change; collect tickets.
• Assist in assuring proper stock levels at serving windows and counters during meal service periods.
• Operate a computerized point of sale system; monitor student PIN input; scan IDs; enter alternate meal selections as necessary.
• Count leftover items; operate garbage disposal; dispose of trash.
• Operate nutrition service equipment such as slicers, strainers, mixers, warmers, ovens and can openers.
• Pull bulk food and supplies from freezers, refrigerators and storage; assist with stocking and rotating food; date food items.
• Participate in site inventories; count milk and juice containers.
• Attend a variety of meetings and trainings.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
