Job summary

The Birmingham Board of Education is seeking an Assistant Custodian to maintain a clean, sanitary, safe facility for students, staff and the public. The role supports building operations with daily cleaning, basic maintenance and adherence to district procedures.

This 12‑month position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a valid Alabama driver’s license, with duties including classroom and restroom cleaning, trash removal, lawn care, and securing doors at day’s end.

Qualifications

• Must provide own transportation.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Valid Alabama Driver’s License required.

Responsibilities

• Provide a high level of customer service as outlined by the Operations Officer.
• Follow instructions from the Custodial Foreman and Principal.
• Assist in overseeing minor repairs.
• Plan daily cleaning for each room or office, including dusting, vacuuming, windows, floors, and carpet shampooing.
• Maintain a safe atmosphere for students, staff, visitors.
• Assist with ordering materials within assigned budget.
• Keep premises neat and clean at all times.
• Ensure exit doors are open and panic bolts work during occupancy hours.
• Secure doors and windows and turn off lights at close of day.
• Clean restrooms and drinking fountains daily per health regulations.
• Clean classrooms and corridors daily.
• Remove trash; perform grass cutting and shrub trimming as needed.
• Care for plants indoors and outdoors.
• Move furniture as directed by the Principal.
• Adhere to district policies and regulations.
• Engage in professional growth and development.
