School Crossing Guard Positions

The Prince George's County Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for multiple part-time School Crossing Guard positions, grade X-13, within the Special Operations Division. Must be able to work both morning and afternoon shifts Monday through Friday.

Work locations are NOT assigned based on your residence; you must be able to work at any assigned location within Prince George's County.

Position Overview

This specialized work involves safely crossing school children and pedestrians and controlling traffic at crossings to prevent accidents and ensure safety. While employees do not have arrest authority, they perform traffic control to facilitate safe vehicle and pedestrian movement. Employees are required to wear uniforms and stand, walk, and use signals, whistles, and voice during work.

Applicants MUST be available between 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. AND 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a permanent part-time position with fixed hours. Reliable transportation is necessary for attending orientation, training, and work locations.

The Prince George's County Police Department, Maryland's fourth largest law enforcement agency, provides comprehensive law enforcement services to over 900,000 residents and businesses. Its mission is to partner with citizens to provide a safe environment and enhance quality of life. The department employs approximately 1,800 officers and 300 civilians.

Responsibilities
  • Direct or escort school children and pedestrians at crossings, stopping traffic as needed.
  • Control vehicular and pedestrian traffic to ensure safety.
  • Monitor traffic flow to identify safe crossing gaps.
  • Guide children and pedestrians, ensuring compliance with traffic rules.
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules to children and pedestrians.
  • Report hazards, violations, and unsafe conditions to supervisors or police.
  • Testify in court cases involving violations, if required.
  • Coordinate with school officials regarding students' cooperation and safety.
  • Perform additional tasks within the occupational category as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 18 years old at application time.
  • Pass vision, hearing, and other required examinations, including drug screening.
  • Reliable transportation to attend training and work locations.
  • Availability to work during specified hours on weekdays.

Conditions of Employment
  • Pass background checks and drug screening (including marijuana and synthetic cannabis).
  • Willing to work at various locations with short notice.
  • Attend all scheduled shifts and perform duties reliably.
  • Work in adverse weather conditions and wear issued uniforms.
  • Have transportation to report within one hour of notification.

Work shifts will be assigned; candidates must be able to work both morning and afternoon shifts between 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
