Job summary

Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking a School Baker (BC-06) to support meal service preparation and satellite deliveries in school kitchens. You will weigh, mix, and bake a variety of goods, coordinate with staff, and ensure food safety and sanitation.

The role requires high school graduation and 6 months of kitchen experience plus 1 year of quantity baking experience in a school or institution. Some substitutions apply; full-time employment with benefits is available.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.
• Six (6) months of work experience as an apprentice or helper in a kitchen where the applicant has basic baking skills.
• One (1) year of work experience as a baker in a restaurant, hotel, hospital, school, or institution producing baked goods in large quantities.
• Substitutions allowed include an associate’s degree in a food service/culinary program including quantity baking, or completion of substantial full-time curriculum with relevant coursework.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and works with other food service staff to prepare baked goods on time for meals and satellite deliveries.
• Reviews production records and ensures ingredients and equipment are available for baking tasks.
• Accurately measures and mixes ingredients per recipes and adjusts yields to meet production needs.
• Bakes a variety of goods including bread, rolls, biscuits, muffins, and pizza crusts.
• Sets up serving counters, serves students and staff, and restocks items as needed.
• Directs helpers and may supervise staff at satellite schools and during baking operations.
• Attends staff meetings and training hours as required by USDA.
