Job Statement

Under close supervision of the SCADA Supervisor, performs routine and progressively more difficult assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities and to provide experience and familiarization with the Engineering methods, practices, and programs of the company. Using prescribed methods, performs portions of broader or more complex assignments as abilities and experience warrant. Applies basic engineering theory and concepts to research, plan and design electric systems. Perform duties to analyze and maintain Huntsville Utilities’ and Redstone Arsenal’s SCADA/ telemetry communication systems and the infrastructure supporting it.

  • Plans for present and future requirements of electric system; prepares cost estimates and keeps management informed of the requirements.
  • Compiles data for load or system studies and makes necessary calculations to determine improvements needed and assumes responsibility for planning, record keeping and preparation of all necessary plans, job orders, drawings, etc., for the additions or improvements.
  • Prepares specifications and cost analyses for new equipment as directed. Evaluates equipment and makes necessary investigations to determine proper type and materials to be used with emphasis on reliability, economy and maintainability. Assumes responsibility for the proper application of the new equipment.
  • Conducts field surveys and prepares cost estimates. Submits completed drawings and estimates to supervisor for checking and approval. Reviews plans, checks details and verifies mathematical calculations.
  • Tabulates bids, inspects materials and prepares requisitions as directed.
  • Provides assistance with or personally handles routine customer inquiries and outage investigations.
  • Become familiar with the electric, system and learns details of system policies and practices.
  • Keeps abreast of new methods, new developments in the industry and engineering standards.
  • Advises and coordinates work with other departments to ensure proper, efficient and reliable completion of jobs.
  • Provides technical direction and assistance to engineering assistants, aides, drafters and operations personnel.
  • Communicates with Redstone Department of Public Works engineers and management to determine facilities required to provide adequate service.
  • Makes on-site investigations as required to determine the cause of outages, dimensions, configuration, or locations of existing or proposed facilities.
Additional Duties
  • Determines through experience and observation any additional requirements for facility installations.
  • Uses computer software i.e., ETAP, ESRI, Survlaent SmartVu, Survalent STC, SEL 5051, SEL Synchrowave, SEL AcSELerator RTAC, GT Viewer, Micro station, Bentley Expert Designer/Design Assistant, Bentley Maps and Bentley Project Wise for mapping and to produce the necessary drawings associated with additions and replacements of facilities.
  • Maintains and updates the SmartVu database and graphics using GIS Wizard.
  • Maintains and updates ETAP database and one line
  • Has the technical understanding of SEL devices to effectively manage inter-related issues.
  • Supports the integration of both SCADA and the Outage Management System.
  • Updates using GPS and other collection techniques GIS data for all electrical, water, gas, and sewer infrastructure including poles, guys, transformers, switches, cable, streetlights, manholes, handholes, substations, sectionalizers, primary source transfer switches, vacuum fault interrupters, water valves and meters, fire hydrants, gas valves and meters on Redstone Arsenal’s utility system.
  • Investigates customer complaints and concerns in regard to power quality. Makes necessary recommendations or prepares work orders to correct or improve power quality issues.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of SCADA for electrical transmission and distribution systems.
  • Prepares monthly SCADA system operational reports for management.
  • Resolves SCADA and telecommunications problems promptly.
  • Responds to on-call and emergency callouts as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Education/Training/Certifications: Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Engineer Intern (EI) Certification preferred.

Experience/Skills: Two (2) years experience in Fundamental engineering or Utility industry experience with SCADA, design, and mapping systems preferred(Survalent and ESRI systems preferred).

Equipment: Calculator, personal computer (MS Word, Excel, Outlook), GIS, GPS, telephone, vehicle.

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Primarily sedentary office work, some exposure to inclement weather for field checks or emergencies.

Other Considerations: Good written, oral and interpersonal skills. Subject to call out after normal working hours. Current driver’s license.
