Job summary

Huntsville Utilities in Alabama seeks an Electrical Engineer to join the Engineering staff under close supervision. The role develops professional knowledge, planning electric systems improvements and cost estimates while applying basic engineering theory and methods.

Responsibilities include data compilation for load studies, preparing plans and drawings, evaluating new equipment, and assisting with customer inquiries.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Professional Engineer or Engineer Intern certification preferred.
  • Good written, oral and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plans for present and future requirements for the electric system; prepares cost estimates and informs management.
  • Compiles data for load or system studies and performs calculations for improvements.
  • Prepares specifications and cost analyses for new equipment and evaluates proper materials.
  • Conducts field surveys and prepares drawings and estimates for supervisor approval.
  • Provides assistance with routine customer inquiries and reviews power quality issues.
  • Uses NISC, OA/DEW, CAD and ArcGIS for mapping and drawings.

Job Statement

Under close supervision, performs routine and progressively more difficult assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities and to provide experience and familiarization with the Engineering staff, methods, practices and programs of the company. Using prescribed methods, performs portions of broader or more complex assignments as abilities and experience warrant. Applies basic engineering theory and concepts to research, plan and design electric systems improvements.

  • Plans for present and future requirements for the electric system; prepares cost estimates and keeps management informed of the requirements.
  • Compiles data for load or system studies and makes necessary calculations to determine improvements needed and assumes responsibility for planning, record keeping and preparation of all necessary plans, job orders, drawings, etc., for the additions or improvements.
  • Prepares specifications and cost analyses for new equipment as directed. Evaluates equipment and makes necessary investigations to determine proper type and materials to be used with emphasis on reliability, economy and maintainability. Assumes responsibility for the proper application of the new equipment.
  • Conducts field surveys and prepares cost estimates. Submits completed drawings and estimates to supervisor for checking and approval. Reviews plans, checks details and verifies mathematical calculations.
  • Tabulates bids, inspects materials and prepares requisitions as directed.
  • Provides assistance with or personally handles routine customer inquiries. Including customer power quality concerns and making recommendations and preparing orders to correct and/or improve power quality issues.
  • Become familiar with the electric system and learns details of system policies and practices.
  • Keeps abreast of new methods, new developments in the industry and engineering standards.
Additional Duties
  • Advises and coordinates work with other departments to ensure proper, efficient and reliable completion of jobs.
  • Provides technical direction and assistance to engineering assistants, aides, drafters and operations personnel.
  • Communicates with customer/developers to determine facilities required to provide adequate service.
  • Makes on-site investigations as required to determine the dimensions or locations of existing or proposed facilities.
  • Determines through experience and observation any additional requirements for facility installations.
  • Prepares work orders, easements, load data and specifications for installations of electric facilities.
  • Uses computer software i.e., NISC, OA/DEW, CAD, ArcGIS for mapping and to produce the necessary drawings associated with additions and replacements of facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Education/Training/Certifications: Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required . Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Engineer Intern (EI) Certification preferred.

Experience/Skills: Two (2) years experience in Fundamental engineering or Utility industry experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems preferred (NISC, CAD, ArcGIS and electric modeling systems preferred).

Additional Requirements

Equipment: Calculator, personal computer (MS Word, Excel, Outlook,), telephone, vehicle.

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Primarily sedentary office work, some exposure to inclement weather for field checks or emergencies.

Other Considerations: Good written, oral and interpersonal skills. Subject to call out after normal working hours. Current driver’s license.
