Job description

Job Summary

This position serves as the Safety Officer for the College of Engineering. The Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring, assessing and mitigating hazardous and unsafe situations and developing measures to assure the safety of faculty, staff, and students, with respect to chemical, mechanical, electrical, environmental user, laser and bio safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as College Safety Officer: Develop and maintain COE safety-related policies, programs, and training to ensure compliance with campus: Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Emergency Operations Plan, Environmental Compliance Program, Environmental.
  • Serve as College Chemical Hygiene Officer: Train faculty and staff on how to use Risk and Safety Solutions software to implement risk assessments of college spaces and maintaining the COE chemical inventory.
  • Laser Safety Officer: Implement COE Laser Safety Program.

Knowledge Skills And Abilities

Must have thorough knowledge of the State and Federal safety, and environmental health laws and codes, and CSU LB policies. Must be capable of multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to plan and conduct difficult and complex investigations of health hazards. Must be able to analyze situations and take effective actions. Must be able to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively, both verbally and written to a group or on an individual basis. Must be able to evaluate current regulations and campus status/needs to determine necessary program changes. Must be able to manage hazardous materials and waste. Must be able to facilitate teaching and research endeavors while simultaneously ensuring all regulatory requirements are met. Must be able to work well with an extremely diverse population of people to increase Program effectiveness. Promote cooperation in the implementation of safety and/or environmental upgrades, achieve problem resolution. Must have general knowledge of utilities and facility issues.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education And Experience

  • A minimum three years of progressively responsible professional experience in safety and regulatory compliance in a comparable setting is required, five years is preferred.
  • Equivalent to a BS degree from a four-year accredited college/university or equivalent work experience in engineering, safety management or relevant field is required.

Physical Summary

Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

  • Certificate in occupational health and safety preferred.
  • CA Driver's License preferred.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,598 - $8,318 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
