You will report to the Shop Manager, perform preventive maintenance, document work, and keep the shop safe and efficient while coordinating priorities with shop personnel.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; vocational training preferred.
• Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate company vehicles.
• Experience in maintenance/repair in construction, fleet, or mechanical shop preferred.
• Willingness to pursue job-related training or certifications.
• Able to pass pre-employment background and driving checks.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the Shop Manager, the Shop Technician performs preventive maintenance, routine repairs, inspections, and basic diagnostics on company vehicles, construction equipment, machinery, and shop tools. The position is expected to complete assigned work with increasing independence, maintain accurate service and parts records, and help keep the shop safe, organized, and responsive to operational needs.

Description and Responsibilities:

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and routine service on fleet vehicles, construction equipment, small engines, machinery, and shop tools in accordance with manufacturer guidance and company procedures.
• Inspect, test, and diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational issues using appropriate tools, service information, and established troubleshooting methods.
• Complete assigned repairs and component replacements within demonstrated skill level and authorization; safely disassemble, reassemble, adjust, and test equipment before returning it to service.
• Identify unsafe conditions, recurring failures, excessive wear, and equipment that should be removed from service; promptly communicate findings and recommended next steps to the Shop Manager.
• Document inspections, maintenance, repairs, labor, parts used, meter readings, downtime, and equipment status in Hilti ON!Track or another designated recordkeeping system.
• Conduct pre-service and post-repair checks to confirm work quality, equipment readiness, and completion of assigned tasks.
• Receive, inspect, label, organize, and issue parts, supplies, tools, and materials; assist with inventory counts, reorder needs, and control of commonly used shop stock.
• Maintain tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery in safe operating condition, including required inspections, storage, and calibration coordination.
• Load, secure, transport, deliver, and unload tools, parts, equipment, and machinery using approved methods and within vehicle and equipment capacity limits.
• Provide limited field or jobsite support for equipment service, troubleshooting, recovery, or delivery when assigned.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and efficient work area and properly handle fluids, batteries, tires, waste, and other regulated or recyclable materials.
• Follow company safety procedures, equipment lockout/tagout requirements, PPE rules, environmental practices, and applicable operating instructions.
• Communicate work status, delays, parts needs, and repair concerns to the Shop Manager and coordinate priorities with other shop personnel.
• Promptly elevate work outside the technician's training, authorization, or capability to the Shop Manager.
• Perform other related duties consistent with the position as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of vehicle, equipment, and machinery maintenance practices, with the ability to perform routine work without continuous direct supervision.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, measuring devices, and basic diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to read and follow work orders, service manuals, safety data sheets, parts diagrams, and manufacturer instructions.
• Ability to recognize when a repair requires additional expertise, authorization, tooling, or outside vendor support.
• Basic computer or mobile-device skills sufficient to enter service records, locate information, and communicate work status.
• Strong attention to detail, dependability, organization, and commitment to completing work safely and correctly.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, respond to changing priorities, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred; vocational, technical, military, or trade training in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, industrial maintenance, or a related field is preferred.
• Prior experience performing maintenance or repair work in a construction, fleet, automotive, equipment, industrial, or mechanical shop environment is preferred. Equivalent combinations of relevant training and hands-on experience will be considered.
• Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate company vehicles; driving record must meet company and insurance requirements.
• Ability to successfully complete job-related background, driving record, and other pre-employment requirements.
• Willingness to pursue job-related training or certifications identified by the company as part of the employee's development plan.
• Maintain reliable attendance and work overtime or adjusted hours when business and operational needs require.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and work in or around vehicles and equipment for extended periods.
• Ability to perform various functional range of motion tasks.
• Ability to lift/carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally more with assistance.
• Ability to perform repetitive motions, including but not limited to gripping, reaching, and using hand and power tools.
• Ability to work on and navigate uneven surfaces and from heights.
• Ability to maintain balance, coordination, and situational awareness in active construction and crane operation environments.
• Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including but not limited to:
  • Extreme heat and cold
  • Rain, wind, and humidity
  • Dusty or noisy conditions
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and task-specific requirements.

Work Environment

• Work is performed primarily in a mechanical shop/facility. However, intermittent presence on active construction sites is required, typically within a shipyard environment.
• Exposure to moving machinery, loud noise, and construction-related hazards.
• Work may occur indoors or outdoors depending on project needs.
• Exposure to heavy equipment, cranes, moving machinery, and vehicle traffic.
• Work may occur at heights, over or near water, and in confined or restricted spaces.
• Exposure to high noise levels, dust, fumes, and airborne particles associated with construction and marine work.
• Work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
• Surfaces may be uneven, slippery, or unstable (e.g., steel decks, scaffolding, gangways).
• Work may require use of ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and temporary structures and safe coordination around suspended loads and rigging operations.
